I think it makes a hell of a lot of sense actually. Logically people are going to be most interested in the fresh links for one and anyway - it makes logical sense to go from the most transitory to the most permanent.

A few things that have occurred to me recently that might be good additions...

I'd be really interested in some statistics of 'take-up' - you know, which sites are FINDING the best stories - who are the meme spreaders, so to speak. I know for a fact it's not me. No one listens to a thing I say.

If you imagine that the first person to find a link is given one 'point' and that for each subsequent person who posts a similar link that person is given an additional point (and this cascading down the line, perhaps - so that the thirtieth poster of seventy would get forty 'points' and the sixty-fifth, five). If you tracked this for all the links in the blogdex top 100, you'd have a pretty good guide to the timeliness and meme-spreader potential of individual weblogs on that day. If you made the amount of 'points' awarded a downward curve then you'd also stop the incentive for people getting the bandwagon late on - for each new person who linked to something the first person would still get one full 'point', but the tenth person may only get half a point - or less...

I'd also be really interested in a graphical relationship of the weblog community through strength and regularity of links - bit of a pointless one, perhaps, but you'd get a picture of a culture at a point - more solid lines representing stronger relationships between sites or something.

I've got all kinds of other irritating ideas, but I'm going ot keep them to myself for the moment.

good points tom. i'm actually looking into exactly that phenomenon for a paper i'm writing at the moment. in the "real" world, most analyses have shown that people tend to be pretty regular when adopting new ideas, hence the terms early- and late-adopter. but what i've seen so far suggests that bloggers are not so regular. there's just so many ideas that spread so quickly, it's hard to be at the top all the time.

i've found that one thing that is much more consistent are the links. when one weblogger links to another, the number of memes that pass through that link tend to be fairly consistent. so if you link to memepool, the average number of links that you find interesting, and decide to post on your weblog remains constant. these are all measures that i'm planning to integrate into the social network explorer.

i've also got a team of undergraduates (2) working on the visualization problem. hopefully we'll have an ego-centric flash visualization sometime in the near future (as a part of the social network explorer). after that's completed, we can try out a bunch of different measures.

The XML/RSS version is still showing the charts in instace of the fresh, can you change it ? Or provide two diferent RSS feeds ?
