One of the topics that arose during our discussion in the P2P Journalism Panel at SXSW was related to an action I took recently. Last week I got an email from a blogdex user that pointed out a weblog currently being indexed in the system. The site, called The Vanguard News Network advocates a reactionary racist and masogonistic ideology, and nothing else. Based on the user's observation that this hateful speech was available in the blogdex interface, which infringed on her ability to use the system, I decided to remove the Vangard News Network from the list of weblogs. This decision was based largely on the fact that the VNN had been crawled since blogdex began, which implied that the author never asked to be part of the index, but was part of the initial list I used to jumpstart the system.
This raises an ethical consideration, made very clear by the audience of the panel. Obviously if I am going to censor websites from the blogdex index, I need to be explicit about the policy I use, in order to avoid hypocrisy. MIT has very strict rules about racism and general harassment, which I am sure cover the rights of distribution extended by blogdex and the Media Lab, unless some serious consideration is applied to the matter.
I'm looking for the opinion of the blogdex community: should a policy be instituted to censor racist or otherwise hateful speech, so far as it infringes upon the users, or should a disclaimer be made about the democratic nature of the content? I made a rash decision before putting it to the community, and I think the topic deserves some attention.

I was at that panel, too, and I was initially shocked to learn that you had deleted a weblog from your rotation.
having put only a little thought into the problem, it seems to me more useful to know what is out there, rather than to allow only those things that are sanctioned. the weblog community is balkanized enough as it is; clusters rarely look outside their own bounds. a tool like blogdex could be useful in giving us the picture of the entire community, but only if if indexes the entire community.
if the language is offensive, perhaps the engine could do a simple search/replace to replace vowels with asteriks, for example, in offensive words?
having said that, I fully recognize that you are using either your own machine and that the language may offend you, or that of an institution that has its own standards for allowing and disallowing speech. if you choose to exclude a weblog or a set of weblogs based on subject matter that you deem to be offensive, then I would encourage you to clearly state your policy on this so that the community (and other researchers) know that blogdex is not indexing a portion of the community.
Sitting up on stage, I did realize the hypocrisy of what I had done. Given the ideology that blogdex promotes, having a policy that restricts the breadth of indexed content seems absurd from this juncture. But my initial gut reaction was that of a parent to a child, trying to protect my users from the message of the VNN.
Speech is only free until it hurts someone. There are no disclaimers on the web, and no fair warnings in any media for that matter, but as a proprietor of a service, I am responsible to some degree for the information doled out to my users. With the correct disclaimer, and viewers screened for age, I'm sure that MIT would stand behind me all the way to the Supreme Court. But are all users willing to jump through these hoops to consume what blogdex provides?
I'm playing the devil's advocate here simply because I know that a majority of my audience are probably members of the EFF and other free speech organizations. My gut reaction was wrong, and that is partially why I brought it up in the panel discussion. I built blogdex as a tool to research weblogs and memes, with the added incentive of promoting online free speech. However, if it somehow becomes a soapbox for preaching anti-semitic propaganda, I will have to deal with the consequences (which might extend my tenure as a Ph.D student).
Most mass media organizations draw the line somewhere to protect themselves from the debate, and it would be easy enough for me to do the same. But I suspect that the users would choose otherwise, and I'm willing to support that decision. As for the Vanguard News Network, they will have to add themselves to the database again to prove that they intended to be part of the index.

Leave blogs (or information in general) like VNN available. People filled with hate will find it without Blogdex, and the rest need to know about it.
You should have left it. It was something people were linking to to make fun of. Also, what does 'infringing' someone's ability to use the system mean exactly? As in their computer was so offended it crashed everytime they went to blogdex?
It's an interesting question, one that comprises not just speech issues, but the gray area of linking as well. You say that mass media organizations draw the line somewhere, that's true, but they are actually providing content, you're providing links to content in an organized manner. Does linking to it equate with making it available? There is also the fact that blogdex has become one of the best weblog directories out there, and the only one that really does what it does. As such, when does it become a matter of community information? Can the Phone Company neglect to list neo-nazi phone numbers in the phone book?
My first reaction would have been to leave it in, but removing it and allowing them to manually add themselves seems reasonable, and that way no one can say you're implicitly endorsing the site.
I say leave it be. As I understand it Blogdex is an indexing system, not a publishing system. If it is to be useful it needs to register all kind of blogs. And imagine if you are to actually carry out the editing job of making certain nobody are offended by texts on sites registered by blogdex - that is by nature an impossible task.
By omitting such sites you lend them weight - they become noticeable by their absence. Let people decide what they want to read themselves - any intelligent person wont be unduly influenced by such sites. Blogdex shouldn't act like a nanny service.
There is a very slippery slope in censorship - if you censor one thing, you wouldhave to cede to requests to censor others. 'Offence' can be subjective. It can also be cultural. As an example, in Britain most people use the word 'crap' or 'crappy' in informal but polite conversation. I understand - correct me if I'm wrong - in the USA this is regarded as offensive. If you censored every Brit Blog that used 'crap' there would be an outcry. But I can see that it might be offensive to a Yank. As regards ideas - good ideas prosper, bad ideas die.
I disagree strongly with the action taken for a number of reasons:
1. Someone complained that the existence of a pointer to a repugnant site in blogdex infringes her use of blogdex. This is a specious argument. By that logic, the existence of the site itself infringes her use of the Internet, but somehow she's managed. (Oh, I see now that apparently she is a he.)
2. As a practical matter, you don't want to put yourself in the position of judge.
3. The solution to free speech that you find troublesome is not censorship, it's more free speech.
my response was mostly in response to the MIT policy on harassment, which I later recinded because of the realization that a simple disclaimer would protect Blogdex. Hopefully this will never happen again (that's why I brought it up in a public arena)
rather than doing the censoring for others, why not find a way that people could implement their own censors and filters; either through their brains or some automation?

1. I support you in your decision to censor the index. Maybe the name should change to "PCBlogdex", that way people know that this index will only reference politacally correct blogs that YOU find to be of value -- and include speech that YOU and MIT find acceptable.
Yes, I am being a sarcastic bastard. I do applaud you for admitting that there may be a problem.
We've come up against the same issue at nycbloggers.com -- what does it mean to be an "impartial" index? Especially because we do choose who's on the index and who's not. So far we've had only one complaint, but then again we're new and not nearly as high-profile as blodgex. Our response has been to put up a disclaimer on our policy site. Of course we'd ban a site if it turned out to have actual malicious code -- but not malicious ideas.
VNN must be censored. They are too good at twisting and turning things and giving people the wrong ideas. Many people can't tell the difference and it's not their fault,either. VNN guilds its message of bigotry and hate with an aura of dry humor, cynicism, and rebelliousness. The last thing we need is for our youth to rebel against the system that we, their once rebellious parents have established. We are too near are goal for that! So scratch VNN from your list, but don't appologize (you shouldn't have even mentioned it), and don't stop claiming to be impartial, open minded, and supportive of free speech. After all, it's ok to be a bit of a hypocrite when one's aim is justice and equality for all (except a small group of pesky, reactionary white males)! Do the right thing.
What you did was an exercise of your right to freedom of association. You are not a government entity, nor are you in a position to make a legal determination regarding VNN.
VNN is deeply offensive to me as a gay white man who grew up in the south and was harrassed and beaten for my willingness to interact with people of other races- even in the eighties.
No matter, so long as you are not making it unlawful to access their site, or eliminating all routes of access, then you are operating well within the constitutional principles that I was taught.
The choice is fundamentally yours and yours alone, unless MIT chooses to shut you down or cut you off from server access.
That being said, I personally agree with others here, that freedom of speech is the best defense against hate and intolerance. But freedom of association is surely as vital to a free society, is it not?
Do you believe that the people over at VNN would think twice about refusing to 'associate' with you?
If you choose to remove VNN or any other blog from your index, I can not see how you would be obligated to then entertain all request to remove links- again- because you have no obligation as an entitiy of authority/law to provide equal access to your index, do you?
Of course, you run the risk of losing some degree of credibility as a index with users if you choose to make such editing decisions.

I think you do the right thing whenever you block groups like VNN. Any group clearly advocating policies of genocide or exclusion or feelings of hatred against an entire group based on religion or race or gender or sexual preference is a hate group.
Contrary to what some people said above, not all people with a brain are at all times able to see how idiotic they are. They do in fact suck people in, play on people's feelings of powerlessness to redirect their hate, etc. If they didn't work, they wouldn't exist anymore, would they?
"Free speech" as an ethical and legal concept _must_ be tempered with consciousness about hate speech, and the principal that speech is in fact a form of action and some speech leads to oppression and violence against people for their ascribed identity.
On the contrary to those people above, I think we have an ethical obligation to work against hate speech. I think your gut did the right thing.

I was at the panel, and hearing you say that did sort of rile the first amendement zealot in me. I'm a firm believer in the need to protect unpopular speech, and I'd like to see every effort made to do so in public spaces, even when I do disagree vehemently with what is being said. The very public and inclusive nature of blogdex would seem to point toward such a policy, but, I do realize that it's your baby and someone else's server space, and that those factors also have to come into account.
So, my two cents are to enourage you to let all memes, regardless of content, get their say. Hopefully, the good ideas will beat the bad ones more often than not, but, if not, at least we'll have a full and accurate picture of exactly what we're dealing with. Of course, it's up to your discretion in the end, but that's my best suggestion.
